Informal Interactions with Chris Sharp

With a role that requires constant thinking about the future and what’s next, how do you slow down to enjoy the present and maintain a balance between your professional obligations and personal life?

In a role that constantly pushes me to think about what’s next—whether it’s the structural implications of 3,000-pound server racks or the future of on-campus microreactors—I’ve learned that slowing down is essential. I make space for the present by engaging in hands-on, personal projects that still tap into my passion for technology. For example, at home in Colorado, my family and I built a computer vision neural network to protect our chickens from predators. It’s a fun, meaningful way to stay connected with my kids and apply innovation in a totally different context. These moments remind me that while the future is exciting, the present is where relationships are built and creativity is nurtured. That balance keeps me energized and grounded. I also really enjoy cars—especially restoring old ones—so I try to carve out moments for that, too.
