AI Advances Fiber Into A New Revenue Cycle

High-density compute, low-latency networks, and the fiber surge beyond them

The surge in artificial intelligence (AI) data center deployment is driving a seismic shift in demand for fiber to connect GPU clusters within data centers and between data center campuses, network access points, and end-user devices. This article explores key market growth drivers and the new opportunities for fiber operators presented by the AI infrastructure boom.

Cloud vs. AI Network Architectures

Cloud data center networks are designed to address client-server traffic patterns. End-users query content served  from data centers on a point-to-point basis  for static data or video and on a point-to-multiple-point basis  for collaboration or communications applications. Cloud data centers are connected  via fiber networks to other data centers within metro markets and to network access points that serve as on-ramps and off-ramps to intercity networks in order to provide complete connectivity solutions.  Cloud growth that drove 30GW of new hyperscale data center deployments globally between 2020 and 2025 translated into corresponding demand for dark fiber solutions as well as IP transit, lit wavelengths, and other services, driving significant revenue for fiber network operators.
