Frankfurt: The World’s Digital Capital

And DE-CIX’s role in the city’s success

AI, data, and digital ecosystems are reshaping the world—and it all depends on the underlying infrastructure. From early Internet Exchanges (IXs) to today’s global digital hubs, the next evolution is here: the digital capital. It’s where business, talent, and connectivity meet to fuel digital power on a global scale.

An independent study by the Dstream Group, published in June 2025, found that Frankfurt, Germany, is the Digital Capital of the world, with an unparalleled combination of very high-density digital infrastructure and the largest interconnection ecosystem of any city on the planet. The Dstream Group’s analysis investigates the infrastructure categories IXs, data centers, connectivity infrastructure, and networks, highlighting the leading position of the German city of Frankfurt. With 20 flourishing IXs and 200Tb of connected port capacity across the city, 2,500 unique networks, and the most highly interconnected data center landscape in the world, Frankfurt is peerless within the global interconnection landscape. While certain other cities achieved top rankings for one or two specific infrastructure areas, Frankfurt was the only city to score high rankings in three categories: the top position in both IXs (shared with Amsterdam) and networks, and second position in data centers.
