Second-Life Innovation

In 2016, I joined Uber to lead their bare metal platform. This role increased my portfolio size. Uber had rapid growth, adding more servers every month to support rideshare, UberEats, Uber Freight and many other verticals that used our digital infrastructure platform. Like ebay and PayPal, Uber retired tens of thousands of servers every year. I found that Uber also had the same security posture of drive destruction. I restarted the debate helping the teams weigh the risks and tradeoffs of wiping or destroying the drives, Unfortunately, the policy also remained. We settled on a sustainability strategy to ensure that the assets that went through the ITAD process had >97% of the metal and other materials in the process recycled.
