The Stargate Project

Bringing together neocloud providers, data centers, hyperscalers, and more for building critical AI infrastructure

To conclude this feature story, we wanted to spotlight what can happen when technology companies, digital infrastructure providers, and investment firms come together for scaling AI infrastructure. Enter: OpenAI’s Stargate.

Launched in January 2025, The Stargate Project originally set out to invest 500 billion USD in AI infrastructure in the United States over the next four years, with 100 billion USD deployed immediately and a goal of 10GW of total new capacity. Initial equity funders included OpenAI (the operational lead) and SoftBank (the financial lead), as well as Oracle and MHX, while Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI acted as the key initial technology partners.

Throughout the next several months, OpenAI began flagship development and operations in Abilene, Texas, and additional data center sites in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Core infrastructure agreements with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave scaled both compute power and deployment. Soon, the project had a planned capacity to nearly 7GW and 400 billion USD in commitments, which brought the project close to its original scale goal well ahead of schedule.
