Early IT Asset Disposition Exposure

EARLY ITAD EXPOSURE

My first experience with ITAD was at Sun Microsystems in 2007. My team rolled out a program called “bring out your dead”. This was a play on a scene from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” where a man attempts to give a dead collector in a plague-stricken village his still-living father. The goal was to retire as many phantom servers as possible across the Sun MIcrosystems U.S. portfolio. In just three months, the program filled an entire warehouse with desktops, servers, and other Sun Microsystems devices, retiring more than 6,000 assets ranging from Sun’s largest servers (E10k) all the way down to desktop units that were almost 10 years old. Back then, I didn’t really understand how the sustainability impact from the program would emerge later on in my career.
