One on One with Julio Bran, CEO, Trans Americas Fiber System

GROWING TOGETHER
The importance of alignment and wide-reaching service provision in connectivity and beyond

In spring 2024, InterGlobix Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Jasmine Bedi, sat down with Julio Bran to discuss the development of the TAM-1 submarine cable system for Central America and the Caribbean. Now, two years later, Jasmine and Julio reconnected to discuss how TAM-1 has evolved, the regional impact the system is delivering, and the future projects and priorities ahead for TAFS and its stakeholders. Showcasing the importance of partnerships, leadership, and perseverance, Bran highlights how he and the Trans Americas Fiber team are ensuring alignment with, and building resilience in, the communities in which they operate.

Over the past four years, TAM-1 has evolved from a bold idea into a fully funded, operational system. What were the defining moments that transformed TAFS from a vision into a credible infrastructure platform capable of challenging legacy models in Central America and the Caribbean?

Looking back five or six years ago, we were discussing creating something transformational for the region, especially the underserved markets in the Caribbean. That was the origin of this project. When we started discussions with AT&T, they were very keen to participate with a wide scope and having them onboard as the first anchor tenant was a defining moment for us in expanding our vision.

Another pivotal moment was when we sat down, got our thoughts in order, and decided to initiate a seed fund for the initial investment in a desktop study and marine survey. This decision exemplified that we were ready to take this risk, as this investigation effectively put a lot of money into the project very early on.
