Google Bets Big On Battery Energy Storage
In December last year, Google announced the installation of the first ever battery-based backup power system to replace the diesel generator at its Saint Ghislain, Belgium, data center. The energy-efficient Saint Ghislain facility, operationalized in 2007, was the first Google da-ta center to run entirely without refrigeration. Instead, it used an advanced evaporative cooling system that drew water from a nearby industrial canal. Then, in 2018, Google expanded the data center and set up a new solar plant.
